Four of NYU Tisch Kanbar Institute of Film & Television's own were victorious at ceremonies that saw tight competition amongst filmmakers and actors alike. The Film Independent Spirit Awards and 83rd Academy Awards®, recognized four with awards - from acting to writing to directing to technical - bringing to light the broad talent for which NYU Tisch School of the Arts trains.
The evening before he co-hosted the 83rd Academy Awards®, James Franco '11 (MFA candidate, Kanbar, Film) received an Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead for his portrayal of Aron Ralston in 127 Hours. At the same ceremony, writer/director Nicole Holofcener '84 (BFA, Kanbar, F&TV) was presented with The Robert Altman Award by IFC.
Writer/director/actor Luke Matheny '10 (MFA, Kanbar, Film) received the Academy Award® for Best Short Film (Live Action) for God of Love. Matheny has been lauded for God of Love as a winner of the NYU First Run Film Festival and recipient of a gold medal at the 2010 Student Academy Awards.
Alumna Lora Hirschberg '85 (BFA, Kanbar, F&TV), with colleagues Ed Novick and Gary Rizzo, was presented with the Oscar® for Best Achievement in Sound Mixing for Inception. Hirschberg had been nominated previously in the Sound category for her work on The Dark Knight.
