Kraszna-Krausz Award for Film: An International History of the Medium (1993). Theatre Library Association Prize for Movie-Made America: A Cultural History of American Movies (1975). Coeditor (with Charles Musser), Resisting Images: Essays on Cinema and History (1990). Coeditor (with Vito Zaggario) Frank Capra: Authorship and the Studio System (Temple University Press, 1998). Editor, Culture and the Moving Image books series (Temple University Press). Past president, Society for Cinema Studies. Recipient, Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundation Fellowships. Other publications include F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Last Laocoön (1967); editor, The Plastic Age: 1917-1930 (1970).
